The course is coming to a close and it is time to wrap up my learning project. My journey of learning ASL throughout the spring semester has been an amazing educational experience. I developed a better understanding of my knowledge on ASL of how the language is shown. I also had the opportunity to grow my vocabulary for ASL, with every week learning new words to practice. This experience has helped me gain the confidence to showcase my learning to others through videos and it helped me break through my nerves in the online world. I found so many great resources along my journey that helped me get a better understanding of how the language works, along with great editing tools to edit my videos that I posted on YouTube (insert YouTube link). Learning ASL has led me to experience new way of learning and I am excited to take a look at my growth throughout this course. Learning Project week 1 – Beginning my Journey Week 1 our task was to tell everyone what our journey could potentially look like. This was a new task for me because I never had the opportunity to learn online before this class, so finding resources was a bit of a challenge at the start. For this weeks post I explained why I wanted to lean sign language.
Learning Project week 2 – Relearning my ABC’s Week 2 I started out pretty easy and began by relearning my ABC’s from before. I learnt my ABC’s from sign language 101 this week and filmed the process.
Learning Project week 3 – Conversational words & 1-10 Week 3 I found new resources to learn from on YouTube instead of sign language 101. This week I challenged myself to learn more words in ASL.
Learning Project week 4 – Colours, Pronouns & 11-20 Week 4 I chose to go back to Sign Language 101 I started to watch longer videos and continue to learn more and more new words.
Learning Project week 5 – Everyday words and phrases & 21-30 Week 5 I focused on learning everyday words and phrases and continuing with my numbers. I realized how important these words would become if I every had to use them.
Learning Project week 6 – O’Canada Week 6 I decided to challenge myself even further and learnt how to sign our national anthem. This was something I have always been interested in, especially when I see it being performed at roughrider games.
Top Three Takeaways:
This journey has been nothing but educational and I can not wait to find different ways to use my new skill. I hope that one day in my future classroom I am able to teach my students about the deaf culture and teach them a wonderful new language. I am looking forward to continuing practicing my ASL skills and to learning new skills in the near future.

Things did not go as planned this week! I know I said in my last post that I was going to learn house hold items and continue with my numbers, but I thought it would be a good idea to push myself harder with it being the last lesson for class. So, this week I decided to learn Canada's National Anthem. I was inspired to learn the national anthem because of TikToks of people signing songs, so I thought I would give it a shot. If I am being honest this was one of the hardest tasks in my learning project. It took me a while to find the right video to follow along with. Most videos were very different from each other, whether that was their speed or the different ways to sign the anthem. After about watching 5 videos that did not work for me I finally found the perfect one. I watched and learned from hwilsond1 on YouTube. Her video was the only one that I could really follow along too because she went at a decent speed. I watched her video multiple times in a row and also had to record myself multiple times too, there are a lot of bloopers. Overall, I really enjoyed learning Canada's National Anthem for my final lesson, I think it will be a great asset for my future classroom as well. Here is this weeks video on me signing the National Anthem. This week for my learning project I looked at learning everyday words and phrases, along with continuing learning numbers 21 to 30 this week. For this weeks lesson I went back to Sign Language 101. I watched Week 3: Everyday Signs & Common Phrases this week and found it different then other weeks. I found this weeks video pretty tricking to catch onto because he would move so fast and I would get left behind. It was hard to see what he was signing at points too because the background he was using would sometimes cut out his hands, which makes it hard to see when that it the main focus. For the most part though I was able to figure out what he was signing and slowly I caught on, after watching the video a couple times. Here is this weeks short film, it is a little longer because I learnt 62 words this week, enjoy! Coming up next week I am going to find other resources to learn from and continue with my numbers while also learning house hold objects.
This week our task was to find a different way of sharing our progress with one another. Although I still shared my work through a YouTube video I took different steps to get there this week. Coming up next week I will Learn numbers 21-30, more common phrases and everyday signs. This week for my learning project I looked at learning basic beginner conversational words so that if I would ever bump into a person who is deaf I could somewhat communicate with them. For this weeks lesson I decided to branch out from Sign Language 101 and found a couple YouTube videos instead. Coming up next week I will learn more numbers and some basic grammar!
Welcome to my first week of ASL! For week one I have decided to freshen up on my alphabet. I watched Sign Language 101's video : Learn your ABC's. I was so excited to start this journey up again, but while I was watching the video I realized that I still could remember some letters and was ahead of the video, while at other times I would complete blank on a letter. Coming up next week I will focus on learning basic greetings and learning numbers! For my EDCT 300 learning project I wanted to explore something that has always been an interest of mine, ASL (American Sign Language). I was in grade 12 when my interest in ASL began. Watching people do it on TV and watching videos on YouTube of people’s days being made because someone knew how to sign. My parents have always told me that I have a special connection with working with differing abilities. In my winter semester I took KIN 120: Sports and Recreation with persons with disabilities. This was my favorite class because it allowed me to work outside of my comfort zone and gain a better understanding of what it might be like to work with people with differing needs. Volunteering with Special Olympics was the highlight of this course but unfortunately got cut short due to COVID-19. Photo Credit: Elisabeth Alvarado, via Spanish Mama |
